Five Strategies to Focus as Much as Possible on the Road

Distracted driving is incredibly dangerous. From the time we start driving, we are told of the importance of keeping our eyes on the road and paying attention to our surroundings. However, distractions happen in many different ways. With the rise of technology in our lives, particularly smartphones, distracted driving has become more common than ever. Despite most jurisdictions passing some sort of distracted driving laws, it is common for drivers to talk and text while driving. However, there are other distractions, including browsing the internet, eating, drinking, reaching for objects, and more.

If you want to stay safe on the roadway, there are several strategies you can employ to ensure you are focused on driving.

1.    Keep your eyes on the road

Nearly every distraction that happens inside or outside a vehicle results in a driver taking their eyes off the roadway. Remember, a vehicle is a heavy machine that can inflict serious damage. Keeping your eyes on the roadway is the most important part of operating a vehicle.

2.    Keep your hands on the wheel

Never take your hands off the wheel when the vehicle is moving. Often, people will text on a cell phone, hold foods or beverages, or reach for items in the car, all while taking their hands off the steering wheel. Do not use your knees to drive the car. It only takes a split second for an emergency to arise on the roadway, and you will not have time to react with your hands off the wheel.

3.    Put the technology away

Technology is of the main distractions drivers face. This is usually in the form of a cell phone, but it can include computers, tablets, navigation systems, and more. Embrace voice commands and Bluetooth technology. Many newer vehicles and phones incorporate driving modes that make it easier for drivers to control while operating the vehicle.

4.    Make frequent stops

If you are planning a longer trip, schedule frequent breaks. Stop every hour for a few minutes. Get out of the vehicle and stretch your legs, grab a snack, and use the restroom. This can help fight fatigue and keep your mind fresh for the road.

5.    Do not play games

Playing games with family and friends to fight off boredom can seem like fun, but it can also be a major distraction. If you are the driver, let others in the vehicle play the game. You need to stay focused on the road at all times.

Distracted driving is one of the most commonly cited causes of crashes. These incidents can lead to serious crashes that cause severe injuries for victims. It is not uncommon to see the following injuries in the aftermath of a distracted driving crash:
